Top 10 Skin Myths

How can you ensure that the information and advice that you receive about your skin is truth? Skin care product companies are trying to sell you their product. Your friends probably have as much medical knowledge as you do. The truth is that, there are more than 10 skin myths that confuse people, but here are some of the most popular ones.
1. Wringles Ladies? Consider antioxidants!
Antioxidants can help prevent wrinkles by soaking up harmful free radicals that damage your collagen. Wrinkles result when collagen is damaged by ultraviolet radiation. Antioxidants, regardless of how potent they are, cannot alter existing collagen that is damaged. Antioxidants therefore do not treat existing wrinkles. This research is being conducted now, but it is still too early. Right now the only topical product that has been proven to reduce wrinkles is Retin-A.
2. Watch what you eat… Pimples coming up!!
Oh My!!! Now if this was really true could you imagine? Acne is caused by over production of sebum (oil) and obstruction of the pores. While we do know that a pore collapses on itself and blocks sebum (oil) from escaping there are other factors to consider such as it being heredity or genetics. Researchers believe that the tendency to develop acne can be inherited from parents. Although there are foods (like Junk food) that will definitively not help your acne condition.
3.Can Dermatologists really diagnose the condition of YOUR skin ?
Some conditions are pretty exclusively treated by a dermatologist. Unfortunately, some people have rashes that fit several different disease profiles. But most skin cancers are treated by a dermatologist. But dermatologists are unable at this time to diagnose ALL skin conditions. Generally, if you have a new rash, you should see your regular provider. Many skin conditions don’t require a specialist to diagnose and treatment.
4. Beware of sun rays, or tanning salons
Tanning? Not a very good idea. Sunlight contains two types of ultraviolet (UV) light: UVA and UVB. UVA rays consist of longer wavelengths that penetrate deep into the dermal layer of skin. Limited exposure to UVA rays causes skin to tan; however, most experts agree that overexposure to UVA can lead to other long-term skin damage. UVB rays are known as the “burning rays” and are considered more dangerous.
5. When it comes to Skin Products… Go Natural!
Unfortunately, this term that is used to lightly.. Cosmetics and skin care products have more than just natural ingredients they also use synthetic ingredients. Which in turn is considered ALL-natural, but in truth is not…
6. Herpes? If my partner doesn’t have a rash, I am safe, RIGHT?
We don’t know completely why some people never develop any symptoms, and yet, they are infected. Understanding how the herpes simplex virus works is crucial. People who are symptomatic or asymptomatic — is the risk of spread, and in fact the majority of the spread of herpes comes when people are actually asymptomatic.
7. Does dry skin actually cause wrinkles?
Of course not!!! Or we all would be looking like raisins since at some point we all have had some type of dry skin. While dry skin is not a direct cause of wrinkles, it can make the skin appear to be aged. The best way to do make sure that your skin is sufficiently well hydrated is to drink sufficient water throughout the course of the day. This will ensure that your whole body is well hydrated and your skin will naturally become a reflection of that healthy state..
8. When it comes to skin care… The quality is in the $$$ right?
WOHHHH. Hold it Dear! There is no proof that using more expensive brands will make that much of a difference compared to drug store brands. Plus, you also need to care your skin from the inside and your diet as well to get the great skin, not just from the outside.
9. Does it take long to ERADICATE my skin condition?
It is a nice idea to be able to have a skin condition and wake up the next morning perfect and back to normal skin. But, there are numors skin conditions that are considered chronic and need to have a treatment that occurs over time and not with quick results. Even with bacterial infections you must start with a coarse of antibiotics before seeing any results. . Here is a list of a few skin conditions that may seem better while taking the medication and then reoccurs when you stop taking the medicine (Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and seborrhea are chronic)
10. Men are LUCKY. They don’t have the many skin problems we women do.
Even though men tend to be more secretive than woman about their skin concerns and problems. Men have just as many of them as women. From a man’s perspective, the #1 skin care problem would probably be ingrown hairs as a result of shaving. The second major problem or complain is about their dry skin.
