Michael Brown: Twin attacks on our clean energy future

This position has co-authored with 350.CHF org founder Bill McKibben

Earlier this week, we attended a conference call the State organized by the Sierra Club accompanied by nearly $ 16,000 Californians to discuss serious environmental issues are at stake in the election of mardi.Près Summit of the list are two initiatives which would break the promise of an energy future.

Now, Californians have begun to get wise proposal 23 - initiative power sales which would effectively cripple our law internationally famous on Global Warming Solutions. Funded by the foreign oil companies, 23 of the proposal is a non-subtle attempt to cripple promising energy clean industry California - and the jobs that will be present with her.

Proposal 23, however, is only half most obvious attack of two components on our future .c ' is because oil companies have one another, but also devastating, initiative on the ballot - 26 of the proposal. But where the proposal 23 is a blatant aggression, 26 of the proposal is more like a sneak attack. It is confusing, poorly written, and do seem to be something it is not.

If approved, proposal 26 would expand the definition of a "tax" to include the fees and charges that address "health, environment, or other social or economic problems." This is important because California taxes require a two-thirds majority vote at virtually impossible by the legislature of the State. The interests of Big Oil behind prop.26 rely on the current political dysfunction of California to keep off the coast of financial hook for pollution they cause in our garden.

Proposal 26 does not protect only the polluters pay but would also be expensive billion California taxpayers. Shirking responsibility to clean up the mess they make polluters behind the proposal 26 put taxpayers on the hook to at least $ 1 billion each year. The costs of cleaning up oil spills, disposal of hazardous waste, or deal with tobacco-related diseases would have all come from the pockets of taxpayers and the industries which actually caused these problems would have to pay a penny.

While the proposal 23 would suspend the Global Warming Solutions Act imposing unrealistic economic barriers, proposal 26 paralyse our climate protection efforts by making it impossible for California finance programs necessary to reduce pollution disrupting the climate.Rather than pay their share to advance California Sales polluters in the State would continue with business as usual.Result? is the California is a leader to energy future. And California, the rest of the United States and directionless.

Big Oil companies would like nothing better .c ' is why it is essential that voters know just how damaging these two initiatives would be in California that they lead towards sondages.Plus early this fall, the Sierra Club launched a community to work against proposals 23 effort and 26 to promote the creation of good jobs through the development of our economy energy propre.Le Sierra Club has established offices in California to help coordinate a massive effort of "out the vote" and had been communicating with constituents to ensure that voters are aware of what is at stake.

We found that when Californians have begun to hear the truth about proposal (23), polls have begun to show support fades for Big Oil attempt to undermine our lois.Il is equally important that we educate voters on the damage 26 proposal would be the environment, our ability to make polluters pay for the mess they cause and portfolio of taxpayers.
