Terry Newell: Promote mastery

Charlie Albright is faithful to its name. At 21, he played the piano since the age of 3 years and he is working on a joint degree from Harvard (pre-medical and economy) and the New England Conservatory of Music (piano performance). He recently won the Gilmore Young Artist Award and last year won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. Debut it before the year is out in New York and San Francisco Symphony.

A recent Saturday, I've heard him in a free concert at Longwood Gardens horticultural paradise near Chadds Ford Pennsylavnia.Mr. Brightman, called "poet of the piano" by one critic has received two standing ovations after Beethoven, sensitive and spirited performance Shulz Evler and Schumann.Je suspected that the audience of tourists weekend, many learn the concert that after the seizure of the garden, where he played, was applauded not only his performance, but dedication of control it represents.

Then the innate talent may well have played a role of Mr. Albright, us fail than in the same way. We're all born with innate talent, after all.But we do all dedicate ourselves to develop .c ' is work hard and focus on getting right marvel at least partly .Peu us audience were sufficiently familiar with the music or the complexities of the piano to applaud because we were critical performance educated.

Magic afternoon a nagging question: where, how and how much, as a society, we encourage our kids to work hard and concentration, dedicated to the master?

The typical day for most children takes approximately seven hours. Meanwhile, 4-5 different subjects may be covered. School average onward, the day is carved in approximately one hour periods are children in different classrooms with different teachers explore different things.I doubt that Charlie Albright may have mastered the piano in a few blocks an hour of time spread over the week.

There are a few places in school, however, where the master is encouraged and given time.He is athletic field, applaud, band and Symphony - after day school officielle.Pour small segment of the student body engaged in, they have the pleasure of the concentration of long hours to control and psychological rewards that come from two. For everyone else, master is not something that most of the schools are designed to provide.

Outside of school, encouraging the master also seems difficult. Most homes have no parents until the end of the day, when they are tired and could not easily help their children cope with anything.Days are missing long for most children, when an Andrew Wyeth, whose paintings are in a Chadds Ford museun) could walk up to the Hill in the studio of his father and watch him painting, try his own hand and receive encouragement, guidance and time on the task of developing his art.

Too many of our young people, the main avenue for control seems to technology.According to a recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average year 8-18-old spends 7 hours and 38 minutes a day of entertainment media (video games, phones cellphones, texto, social media, etc.).It's so much time they spend at school (and some of them use these media it too, master that much more challenging academic) .a great part of this period, they are uninterrupted, free to concentrate and focus and often helped by mentors, peers) measure. It is not clear, however, that such control contributes to their intellectual, moral or social development (the Kaiser study showed that 47% of users of media heavy report obtaining degrees in fair or poor, compared to 23% of users of light). At an age where thoughtful and masterly direction could produce a Charlie Albright, too many of our children is left to themselves.

Educators and politicians have convinced many youth education we need longer school day and the year school, better paid teachers, small classes, better facilities or a combination of all these choses.Mais precious little evidence that all this fonctionnera.Ce running and we see Charlie Albright (and Andrew Wyeth), is an early effort and dedicated to encourage talented, qualified mentors times concentrate and recognition of control that it is développe.Si we want to really improve the education of our youth, we must find ways to create the conditions for their days and after school.

Not all members of society should be a Charlie Albright.Ce isn't Woebegone Lake - not all children is above average, although each child can be above the average in something) .but a company which does not encourage the master gets primarily performance moyen.Pour our children, for ourselves and for our future, we must longer.
